Debt Relief
Medical bills, a divorce, a job loss and mounting credit card debt are all reasons honest, hardworking people fall into debt. At the Dotson-Smith Law Office, we listen so that we can understand your financial situation and help you get the fresh start you need.
After carefully examining your circumstances, we will advise you on a proper course of action, whether:
Guardianships
Sometimes when a person ages they develop dementia or they have a medical condition that makes it hard for them to express their wishes or pay their bills. With good planning, a Healthcare Power of Attorney or Durable Power of Attorney can provide a loved one with a responsible person to help them during these times. But often the medical condition happens before these papers are signed. When that occurs, sometimes a Guardian needs to be appointed. If you know an adult who lacks capacity or a minor who has special needs and is about to become an adult, they may need a guardian to assist them with healthcare choices or financial responsibilities. Our office represents relatives trying to get a guardian appointed, people who have an interest in the proceeding or the person whose capacity is being challenged. We can help you find a guardian or help you become the guardian for someone about whom you care. We can either file a petition on your behalf, serve as a Guardian ad Litem Attorney Advocate or support you in objecting to a petition already filed.
Mediation
By providing mediation services, attorney Susan Dotson-Smith helps individuals or groups of two or more parties to resolve disagreements in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Mediation is a method of alternative dispute resolution in which a neutral third party mediator helps two parties come to a favorable mutual agreement and avoid going to court. Ms. Dotson-Smith is a Superior Court Certified Mediator. She is also certified to mediate matters before the Clerk. Areas which can be helped by mediation include guardian cases, estate and probate matters, and other family disagreements about inheritance or care of a loved one.

This can only be done through hard work, effective planning and building collaborative support.
