Susan M. Dotson-Smith believes in giving back to communities and to sharing her gifts to help better the community.
In 2008 she was recognized as a "Champion of Justice" by the NC Bar Association and was a recipient of the Buncombe County Outstanding Service Award for her commitment to serve the poor and indigent. As a regular "Hotline" attorney and Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyer with Pisgah Legal Services, Susan Dotson-Smith is dedicated to providing justice for all.
In addition, Susan Dotson-Smith is past president of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys. Her involvement in this association shows her strong belief in mentoring young attorneys to become civic leaders and in her belief that people should use their knowledge of the law to improve the quality of life for all people. She is also involved with the North Carolina Bar Association through their Modest Means Committee and the 4-All Committee. Both committees are concerned with access to justice for all. Susan Dotson-Smith is dedicated to equal access to justice and continues to work with various groups to help end discrimination and help encourage an appreciation for diversity and for social justice.
Attorney Susan Dotson-Smith is a certified Living Wage Employer who believes that if you work a full 40 hours, you should be able to live on the wage provided you. To that end she stays aware of living wage issues versus the minimum wage.
Born as the granddaughter to a Southern Baptist Preacher, Susan Dotson-Smith attended First Baptist Church growing up in Winston-Salem and currently attends First Congregational United Church of Christ in Asheville. She sits on the Worship committee and chairs the Sacred Dance Group. She has been a deacon as well.
In addition, she is active in the Girl Scouts which allows her to combine her commitment to help with her personal joy of watching her two daughters grow. She has been a Girl Scout Daisy and Junior Leader and is currently as assistant Brownie Troop Leader.
She continues her close ties to On Track Financial Counseling, a nonprofit United Way agency dedicated to financial education and counseling. She has served on their board and is a past staff member.
